It was a Friday afternoon when I picked up a copy of the New York Press, and skimmed through it, while terminating a lunch break. It was then that I came across an advertisement for a tuition-free, one week course at the Center for Book Arts. Along with five other young ladies, all from different boroughs and backgrounds, we had a ball, and in the end came out with valuable and worthwhile experiences. The first, was five new, hopefully lasting friendships. The second, was the know-how and craftsmanship to make one of the world's best loved treasures -- books. Lastly, the power and the trust to illustrate the books our way, with things that were important to us. Too often, as young people, we are dictated at, and spoken at, but rarely heard or given the means to be heard. At the Center, you were encouraged to break the boundaries and use unconventional methods. Everything was at our disposal. Our instructor, Cheryl Shackelton, was insightful, probing, and helpful. With her we were not only creating art, but engaging in powerful conversation. Thanks to all those who made this program possible, and to the whole staff at the Center. It has been an experience that I am not likely to forget.
