Song of Songs I & II

Rochelle  Rubinstein

Years ago, I discovered a very sexual book in religious school -- "Song of Songs". The rabbis tried to convince us that it was a love poem between God and his people but clearly it was for the most poart about desire and sex. ("Your breast are like two fawns…my nard gave forth its fragrance…") Here is my version of "Song of Songs," in two handwritten and illustrated books, one Hebrew, one English. The illustrations are linocuts printed in black over details on contemporary magazine advertisements (Armani, Calvin Klein, lots of skin). These images serve as a commentary on, and counterpoint to, the ancient, but still provocative, text.
