Bed Time Stories and Other Recipes

I appreciate works that bear indelible traces of their maker's hand, and provide overt or oblique clues about their history. By erasing, scratching through, and layering marks, I make dense surfaces that provide visual histories of themselves through this pentimenti, or matrix of marks, blots, erasure, and smudges. I strive to create objects that are visually rich and dense, yet lighthearted enough to evoke playful times and a guarded nostalgia. "Bed Time Stories and Other Recipes" is a collage painting on an "immobilized" book. This three-dimensional piece hangs on the wall, yet the structural support of the matrix of layered marks and images is an actual book, fixed in time and space on one spread. Perceptible beneath this "perma-spread" are layers of pages hidden below. These potential pages impregnate the tableau with a sense of coitus interruptus. The hidden pages imply foreplay and denouement, yet even an embarrassed viewer can't turn the page to avoid the ecstatic couples that inhabit the bedspread and picture frame.
