Child's Play

Betty  Tompkins

Coated stock, oil crayon. Imagery from "Eternal Greece" 1953.
12 x 17 in
number 1
edition of 1

The focus of my work since 1987 has been to use commodified images of Art History (or its remnanta) mis-situated in the natural world. I quote these published images of the past to create contemporary allegories of private fantasy and to investigate their continuing relevance. I am interested in that moment in a narrative that is simultaneously funny and disturbing. In this series, I have edited and recombined images of Greek and Roman art. All of the drawings are done with oil crayons drawn directly on the pages of old art history books. The series is called "Defacements" in recognition of its origin as both printed matter and art history. To me, the subtext of all fairy tales is impending disaster.
