This project by the Fall 1992 Typography class at Scripps College is an exploration of the possibilities inherent in the folding and unfolding of paper. We discussed the use of folds to reveal or conceal messages, to watch the drama unfold, to be in the fold. There was experimentation with origami and with fold used in commercial printing. We folded, cut , tore, rolled and curled paper to support an egg in exploring the strength of paper; we looked at the way we fold and sew paper for books and how we attach covers to the text. Unfolding became a metaphor for self-revelation in the process of making the book; thus, a self-portrait appeared on each cover. Due to the nature of the binding structure initiated by Nadine Francis, the students had to devise a closure for each tale. We constructed seven different models of the binding and eventually chose Tyvek for its strength and flexibility and colored it with acrylics.
