Music stirs up complex and intriguing emotions, conjures up remembrances, and sparks the imagination with rich sound imagery. It involves all the senses, so each student in the typography class at Scripps College focused on one of the senses, including intuition. In addition, music is appropriate for the content of a book because of the development of a theme over time. We listened to music as a catalyst for a self-portrait. The students were asked to choose music that was important to them to create imagery as they listened to their music, and then compose works to enhance the imagery. As in all books, the sturcture each student chose to express her work evolved from the requirements of the test; that is to say, the sequencing of the story dictated the form. Then, because this book is a collaborative effort, we chose to bind the stories together in one volume. Thus we came to think of this book as a libretto, telling a grand operatic story of the students' lives.
