Jose Montoya has been and continues to be one of the premiere cultural activists in the Chicano movement. He is an artist, a musician, and a poet. He writes in a liguistic braid of Spanish and English that exemplifies vividly the leap in perceptual and aesthetic power available to the bilingual poet. The language of the Chicano is more than a mixing of separate languages. It is a blend of the two into a third which becomes intrinsically fused. Jose Montoya is an expert in this linguistic synthesis. Spanish and English are no longer independent codes but a single hybrid.
