POET IN CUBA was a book which was important for me to make. The poetry from one of the greatest Haitian poets of the 20th century has a poignant immediacy, the one of the political poets in exile, and yet its simplicity, its love for life and its small pleasures make it joyous and wonderfully human. I felt that I wanted to experiment with the idea of a letterpress edition of my own selection of the poems because the poetry is so important, while conveying a sense of its political aspect by only using available mixes -- style and size -- foundry type from the Center for Book Arts, by designing a binding which would be both the book and its slipcase, in short a true "pocket" book printed on a handmade paper which would have the feel of kraftpaper, its cover blood-red and sea-green as sad and colorful as the island of Haiti, the book, its intent being a series of contradictions, the very way Depestre's poetry reads.
