On Liberty and Justice

John  Ross

Woodcuts and letterpress on Waterford paper
10 1/2 x 8 in
edition of 40

For more that fifty years I have been interested in the design and production of books, starting from my years at Cooper Union School of Art in New York City where I studied calligraphy with George Salter and book design with Esmond Shaw. My present commitment is to concentrate on making my own artist's books. . .in which I control all the visual elements in the process. I work with a variety of materials to make the plates or blocks which carry the image, from woodcuts and etchings to collagraphs, printed either in relief or intaglio. The collagraph, a print pulled from a collage plate of cardboard, paper, sand, fabric, and found objects, is a particularly favored technique of mine and most of my images are created by this method.
