For over ten years I worked and played in paper. I folded, dyed, stamped, printed, and painted on flat sheets. I cast paper, sculpted it freestanding, suspended it, and pushed its boundaries further yet. It was painting on cast paper that became my forte. // In 1987 my exploration of paper led me to a fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council. With this fellowship, I ws able to take a studio space at The Institute For Art and Urban Resources, P.S. 1 in New York. It was during this stay that I came to the realization that painting on canvas was the direction I found myself pursuing. The solo exhibition "Sunrise-Sunset," at the Madison Art Center in Wisconsin in 1990, was a culmination of my works on paper. This show included a twenty foot high set of painted vacuum cast paper doors and other paper master works. With this show came the introduction of paintings on canvas. These paintings originated from a series of collage miniature sketchbooks. // The series of paintings entitled "Genetics" was spawned from these journals of collage images. The development of these sketches occurs over a period of several years. Within this time, ideas are constantly being accumulated and juxtapositioned similar to the photomontage found in film. Conceptually, the formulation of these images might be linked to the kind of channel surfing that can be done through remote control with television. In the reality achieved, there is no hierarchy of importance. Words, images, and symbols appear and dissolve instantaneously, leaving the viewer with an assemblage of meaning.
