Girl With Pet

Maria I.  Robledo

1982

Though my photograph's construction takes its cue from children's books and toys, the deceptively simple concept of "play" is being used as a structure to accommodate higher levels of thought. My pop-ups are simply another way to visually study and make relationships between subject, environment, light and shadow in a photographic portrait. These pop-ups are "about" rather than "of" an idea or subject.// When dealing with photography, I want to take into account positive and negative space -- the reversal of physical properties. For example, shadows become three-dimensional shapes as figures become flat and one-dimensional.
