Making of the Duke De Berry's Book of Hours, The

Amalia  Hoffman

1982

My paper sculptures are the result of working, experimenting and discovering the versatility of this dynamic and diverse medium.// I look upon each work as a paper theatrical tableau, assembled in three-dimensional form. Incorporating a number of layers of paper, as well as cut-out figurines, enables me to achieve a dramatic play of lights and shades. Thus, the shadows, as well as the pencil work, contribute to the tonality or chiaroscuro in each piece. While I often let the cut-out forms create visual vignettes on the paper, I also attempt to draw "faked" shadows with pencil. The result is a double-play of layering and workin with the third dimension.
