Night Music

Martha  Carothers

1982

The book form allows paper to become three-dimensional with every turn of a page, but rather it becomes a part of a whole, one step in a sequence or a prelude to every page that follows.// I use paper, intrinsically a two dimensional medium, to create three-dimensionality. I want the work to intrigue the viewer and to cause the viewer to want to touch its visual contrasts of texture, color and shape.// I design pages and books that come to life by moving off of a flat surface and entering into the viewer's space, thus challenging involvement. The pages pop-up and become sculptural by utilizing paper to incorporate form and shape with light and shadow.
