"All Things" was designed and published by Shari DeGraw under the Empyrean Press imprint at the University of Iowa. The book design is restrained to place emphasis on the magnitude of Graham's verse. It's so restrained, I consider the indigo-dyed flax paper an illustrative element for the cascading lines and ocean imagery. The title page illustration shows a new photopolymenr plate technique used for reproducing the charcoal drawing which was created by Ronal Cohen. The technique produces a more graphic looking image than the original, and still captures light, medium, and dark shades of any tonal drawing.// In working with this manuscript, I wanted to create a design that fits the tenor of the poems and gives the book a timeless quality. I'm glad the tidal waves of blue vary dramatically from one cover to the next. Even the silk-sewn headbands vary in color on each book. The book artist's expression is placed on classical book typography and crafsmanship here. Although I don't expect to make every book this way.
