In Germany there is a word "basteln," which means making things, and this is what everything was for us pre-war. We made things. It wasn't called art, it was what you did. My grandmother was a disciple of Froebel, who invented the kindergarten, which in its origin was a very well developed system for nurturing the artistic impulse in children. So from a very young age I was working with my hands, making things, engaged in this creative play.
