Hall of Fame

Ruth  McGurk

1998
Baseball horsehide cover, drawings with handlettered text
3 x 2 in
number 1
edition of 1

"Hall of Fame" came about when a neighbor kid hit a baseball over the fence. I didn't find it until snails and dirt had rotted the seams. I took the ball apart to see how it was made. The empty hide struck me as a perfect readymade leather binding for a baseball book. // I am a longtime fan of the Oakland A's and St. Louis Cardinals but my loyalty in the era of frequent trades is not to these teams but to those players whose grace, determination and spunk continually renew the sport. My "Hall of Fame" consists of caricatures of my favorite players combined with short warts and all captions.
