Turning Into a Pumpkin
Betsy Davids 1996 paper bag, photos, collaged elements, handwritten text 8 1/2 x 15 in (open) number 1 edition of 1 Turning Into A Pumpkin is one of a series of books that combine the perennial personal bookmaking genres of journal, scrapbook, photo album in one of their classic contexts: travel. In Pumpkin, the journey in question was a series of three trips to the principal site of dream healing practices in ancient Greece, Epidauros, where I played out a midlife quest for spiritual reorientation through dreams and brought home the dream images that became, first, a trio of pumpkin carvings, and then this bag book which incorporates the snapshots, the journal writings, the stuff of travel life. The choice of materials and genre speaks of ordinary experience and its heartening capacity to support transformation. | ||||
