In 1982 I embarked on a series of collages that reconstituted the paintings that appeared in "The History of Art" by H.W. Janson. This book had been the "Bible of Art" for countless numbers of students in 1972 until 1982 when it occurred to me that this book was an exclusively male-dominated history of art. The failure to include even one woman artist in this scholarly work ignited a spark of rebellion in me. With truth and justice in mind (and scissors in hand) I sought a remedy to this solution./ My first step was to remove all the color plates from Janson's book. Next, in order to place a woman artist physically and symbolically inside these works of great art I replaced the faces of the subjects with my own.
