Lipton: the gallows book

András  Böröcz
Robbin Ami  Silverberg

1992
edition of 8

The bizarre similarity in appearances between public figures Stalin & Lipton, was the starting point in making this gallow-shaped book. These two icons, one political and the other commercial, are montaged into 17 well-known images of Western cultural history, such as Romulus & Remus, Mme. Guillotine, and Duchamp & his samovar/pissoir./ The edition, published in 1992, is limited to eight. Five copies are hardbound with pulp painted sections. Three copies are folders with single leaf pages./ All copies contain hand-drawn images made with Mont Blanc ink and Lipton tea, teabag collages, and handmade Dobbin Mill paper. Pages are made of abaca fiber, which is commonly used to make teafilter papers in the United States. Endsheets and cover papers are made of abaca and linen dyed with 3 different teas. Each copy has a plywood case. The text, laser printed in Helvetica and designed on a Macintosh, was compiled by Laura Hoptman and offers details from biographies of Stalin & Lipton, emphasizing their absurd similarities.
