Anxiety Journal

Susan  Newmark

1994
number 1
edition of 1

Over the past three years, I have been exploring various one-of-a-kind book structures that focus on personal and social themes and incorporate many mixed media and three dimensional elements. The themes I work with involve portraits of family and friends, memories, journals and emotional states -- from anger to anxiety to agoraphobia, crime, violence and other inventories of modern life. For text, I have used writing from my own journals along with poetry, fiction, nonfiction and newspaper articles by others, comic books, and fragments on particular subjects collected from friends. In my recent monoprints and past paper series, I have been concerned with using color to create an all over saturated and complex surface, a visual field which integrates drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, stitchery, and text.
