Breaking Down Cancer

Kumi  Korf

1993
number 1
edition of 1

My own history, the knowledge of illness, and a prayer for healing combine in this work. Enlarged color photocopies of medical biopsy slides of my lymph node and bone marrow are used to cover the box; x-ray films of my skull and neck form the cover. Inside, dried pomegranates placed on platforms represent three components of the Chinese character for cancer. Breaking down that ominous character into a playful and hopeful work was a positive healing gesture. Acupuncture needles inserted into the platforms emphasize prayer and healing.
