Royne Descosse

Rose  Frain

1993
number 1
edition of 1

The artist has extracted two pages from a box/bookwork, signalling 8 February 1587, the day Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, was beheaded on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The content of "Royne Descosse" relates to Mary's original letters and manuscripts researched by the artist in the National Library and Register House in Edinburgh./ In this further conceptualization, the sex-death paradigm, previously mediated by the two scuptures and wall drawing, wax, bloodied handprint, pages and texts, is replaced by a black box and red silk containing the texts, pages, drawing and letter as a box/bookwork.
