Ivan Bilibin

The Russian graphic artist and stage designer, Bilibin, produced marvels of detailed illustration revealing his strong interest in Russian medieval folk art. He has become famous in book circles for his depiction of fairy tales. His style was highly individual and much imitated, with flat washes fo vivid color, foreshortened perspective and intricate design related to Art Nouveau. After the Russian Revolution, Bilibin lived in the Crimea (1917-1920), then continued his painting and theater design work in Egypt and France. He returned to Leningrad in 1936 to become professor of graphic art at the Academy of Arts. He died in Leningrad in 1942 during the German seige of the city during World War II (The Great Patriotic War).
