(The Work of a) Diligent Scribe

Anne Hicks  Siberell

1993
scroll binding
5 x 5 in opens to 5 x 10 in
number 1
edition of 1

Waiting in line at the post office I noticed that even with computers glowing, the clerk behind the window painstakingly re-inked his stamp pad so that he could more efficiently and with precise wrist-movement, pound my envelope flat. I thought of the scribes, and how dedicated they were to their copying before the use of relief printing. I combined the clerk's stamp pad and the scribe's scroll into a "what if."// My work over time has been concerned with nonverbal forms of communication among early civilizations--and the commonality of signs and symbols between all cultures and how they have continued to be viable over time through idea transmissions and/or memory jogs.
