My current work has developed from an interest in Eastern philosophy, mythology, and almost four years of research as a visiting scholar in Japan. While studying woodblock printing and papermaking in Kyoto, I had the opportunity to research traditional bookforms. I was most intrigued with scroll and accordion-style books. Both not only segmented the image, suggesting fragmentation and serialization, but also presented the contents to the viewer as a whole. Although the Japanese characters were for the most part unreadable, I was most fascinated with this perfect format where art and text as visual pattern converged.
