Outside Art

Marylee  Bytheriver

1998
linoleum blocks printing
8 1/2 x 11 x 9 in
edition of 50
published by Lunation Press, Oakland CA

Using images of graffiti and Native American petroglyphs, Outside Art raises questions about both the content and context of art: Who defines what is art and what is not? Is our appreciation of art dependent upon our ability to understand the intention of the artist? Does the identity or anonymity of the artist affect the value of the art? Can art be both destructive and creative? Is natural weathering an artistic process itself? The "tunnel book" structure of the limited-edition artist's book allows the reader to view both graffiti and petroglyphs in the context in which they are usually found. All images were created from linoleum blocks carved and printed by the artist on archival paper.
