Ballad of Annie Taylor
Linda Muriello 1995 number 1 edition of 1 When I visited Niagara Falls, I was riveted to the quarter binocular machines. I pointed the unwieldly device at the apex of the Falls and watched the exact spot where the water flowed over the edge until my quarter ran out. Pumping in quarter after quarter, I was mesmerized by the power of the water and tried to comprehend what it would be like to ride those waters. I was surprised to learn that a sixty-three-year old woman named Annie Taylor was the first ever to go over the Falls and survive./ The book is sewn inside a barrel. Within the book I have tried to re-create the thoughts and feelings of Annie Taylor inside her barrel as she made her historic trip through the rapids, over the edge, deep into the water behind the falls and finally, released. Annie did write a pamphlet about the facts of her trip, but it tells us very little about the experience. We do know she was incoherent, in bed for days, and that she didn't care to do it again. | ||||
